It is believed to be a source of spiritual protection and blessing from the Blessed Virgin Mary. The front side of the medal features an image of Mary with her hands open, surrounded by the words "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." The back side has twelve stars, symbolizing the Apostles, surrounding an "M" with two hearts at its base - one surrounded by thorns and the other pierced by a sword.
